Event Description

This seminar will explore how the principles of building physics should inform design decisions in retrofit projects. Presentations, with examples drawn from real projects with practical exercises will address:

  • Carbon, energy consumption and measurement,
  • Energy movement and thermal transfer,
  • Air tightness and thermal bridging,
  • Ventilation, moisture and human comfort.

The consequences – and potential unintended consequences and pitfalls – of particular design strategies will be discussed. A number of practical short exercises will be used to illustrate issues raised and help deepen understanding of the complex issues involving building physics and retrofit projects.

Speakers: Frances Bradshaw, Partner, Anne Thorne Architects has extensive experience in participatory design and community projects, with a strong focus on green design. Recent ATA projects include ‘Retrofit for the Future' competition houses demonstrating 80% reduction in CO2  emissions, housing and urban renewal projects for Metropolitan Housing Trust and LB Lambeth, which have won ‘Building for Life’ gold awards.

Robert Prewett, Partner, Prewett Bizley Architects. Prewett Bizley have built up a significant experience in low carbon building strategies for new build and retrofit. In 2009 Robert led a retrofit of a Victorian house where the heating demand was reduced by 80%. Prewett Bizley have since carried out a number of other low carbon projects including a domestic retrofit sponsored by the Technology Strategy Board where they acted as contractor as well as designer. Robert believes that architects have an important role to play as co-ordinators for the huge amount of retrofit work that is required in the UK.
